Testing Infrastructure Setup Summary

Overview

Successfully set up comprehensive testing infrastructure for both server and client applications.

Server Testing (Jest + TypeScript)

Completed: - Jest configuration with TypeScript support - Test directory structure (unit, integration, utils) - Unit tests for middleware and basic route handlers - Test utilities class for database operations - Proper TypeScript configuration for tests

Test Results: - Unit tests: 14/14 passing ✅ - Integration tests: Need database schema fixes (missing required fields)

📁 Structure:

│ ├── middleware.test.ts
│ └── routes.test.ts

Client Testing (Vitest + React Testing Library)

Completed: - Vitest configuration with jsdom environment - React Testing Library setup - Test utilities and mocks for common browser APIs - Component tests with proper mocking - API utility tests (revealing actual implementation differences)

Test Results: - Component tests: 6/6 passing ✅ - API utility tests: 8/15 passing (tests correctly detecting implementation differences)

Test Scripts Added

Server

"test": "jest",
"test:watch": "jest --watch",
"test:coverage": "jest --coverage",
"test:unit": "jest tests/unit",
"test:integration": "jest tests/integration"

Client

"test": "vitest",
"test:ui": "vitest --ui",
"test:run": "vitest run",
"test:coverage": "vitest run --coverage"

Key Features Implemented

1. Database Testing Utilities

  • TestUtils class for creating test data
  • Automatic cleanup between tests
  • Support for events, participants, competitions
  • Proper Prisma client management

2. API Mocking

  • Global fetch mocking for client tests
  • Prisma mocking strategies for unit tests
  • Express app testing with SuperTest

3. React Component Testing

  • Mock implementations for external dependencies
  • Browser API mocking (matchMedia, IntersectionObserver, etc.)
  • Proper cleanup after each test

4. TypeScript Support

  • Full TypeScript coverage in tests
  • Type-safe test utilities
  • Proper Jest/Vitest globals configuration

Issues Discovered

  1. Integration tests failing - Database schema requires additional fields (dat_von, var_bezeichnung)
  2. API utility test mismatches - Tests revealing actual implementation differences (good!)
  3. Missing database fields - Tests correctly identifying required schema fields

Next Steps for Full Test Coverage

  1. Fix integration test database schema issues
  2. Update API utility tests to match actual implementation
  3. Add more component tests for key UI elements
  4. Create end-to-end tests for critical user flows
  5. Add performance testing
  6. Set up CI/CD integration

Commands to Run Tests

Server Tests

cd server
npm run test:unit # Run unit tests only
npm run test:integration # Run integration tests only
npm test # Run all tests
npm run test:coverage # Run with coverage report

Client Tests

cd client
npm run test:run # Run all tests once
npm test # Run in watch mode
npm run test:coverage # Run with coverage report

Coverage Goals

  • Unit Tests: Target 80%+ code coverage
  • Integration Tests: Cover all API endpoints
  • Component Tests: Cover all user interactions
  • E2E Tests: Cover critical user journeys

The testing infrastructure is now ready for comprehensive test development and code refactoring!
